South Shropshire at Eyton on Severn
Monday 7th May 2018
by Rory Alkin

The meeting took place in glorious sunshine on good ground in front of a large crowd. Alex Edwards had another great day winning on all four mounts for trainer Phil Rowley, courtesy of Share a Bear, Now Ben, Sulu Magic and Pique Rock.

In the Opening Maiden for four, five and six-year-olds over two and a half miles, he took it up on Share a Bear from Big Brother George in the final mile and won by an easy three lengths. The four-year-old Malinas gelding was bought at Doncaster for £75,000 last year for owner George Barlow.

In the Open, Now Ben made most of the running and was never troubled eventually winning by five lengths from Fight Away Boys.

In the Confined, Henry Crow on the favourite Irish Anthem made all the running and was only caught in the final stride by Edwards who conjured up a successful late run on the Brampton Bryan Maiden winner Sulu Magic. Phil Rowley has always liked this horse and had no hesitation in running here instead of the Restricted.

Edward's easiest winner of the day was aboard the Juliet Minton owned Pique Rock who went clear four out and won by twenty-five lengths from Asangy.

In the Ladies Open, novice rider Leanne Painter had her third win of the season aboard Global Power for owner/trainer Heidi Brookshaw beating Swift Escape.

Heidi's other runner Bay Sly, ridden by Hugh Nugent led for most of the journey in the concluding Members, but came under pressure after the third last and was collared by Henry Crow on Toodles Horse at the second last who gained revenge for his earlier defeat, winning by one and a half lengths. The winner is trained by the jockey's grandmother Sheila Crow for long-time owner 91-year-old Derek Pugh.

In the other Open Maiden, Immy Robinson held up Beggars Bush and came with a good run to take it up at the third last and win by three and a half lengths from Grove Castle and Love Around. The winner is trained by the jockey's mother Caroline who bought the seven-year-old gelding at Doncaster sales for owners Rob Martin, Margaret Roberts and Richard Mapp. The trainer has been very patient with the horse and had declined recent engagements in search of the better ground here.
