Curre & Llangib Howick
Sunday 2nd March 2008
by Brian Lee

RHYS FLINT, 16, riding his nine-year-old chestnut gelding Iris’s Prince, clocked the fastest time of the day when winning the men’s open race at the Curre & Llangibby Point-To-Point Steeplechases on Sunday.

Iris’s Prince, who was winning for the third time this season, came home 15 lengths ahead of Derring Dove with the odds-on favourite Lough Ennel a further six lengths away in third spot.

Rhys, who was riding his seventh winner of the season, will be riding in a novice riders’ race at Bangor-on-Dee next Saturday.

Beth Roberts’s Chesnut Annie, partnered by Isabel Tompsett, was an impressive winner of the ladies’ open finishing a distance clear of Ello Ollie after the odds-on favourite Wages, well beaten at the time, pulled up five fences from the finish.

There were doubles for Lucy Pearce-Rowsell and Adrian Wintle. Lucy won both divisions of the restricted race on horses owned and trained by David Brace. She won the first on the galloping grey Margam Abbey and the second on Victor Merlyn. Adrian scored on All Thyne Greats (maiden one part two) and Sparklinspirit (maiden division two). Both are trained by Andy Hobbs.

Robert Kirk, who celebrates his 19th birthday today, chalked up his first winner when landing the third division of the maiden on Mr Roche T.

Reigning national champion James Tudor, who failed to ride a winner, had brought his season’s tally of wins to 13 when riding a 66-1 double at the East Devon meeting on Saturday with 5-1 chance Kings Bitter (maiden division three) and 10-1 shot Off Broadway (intermediate). Kings Bitter scored by two-and-a-half lengths from Sir Oscar and Off Broadway won by three parts of a length from Slaezy.
