Sunday 18th January 2009
by John Milburn

The Yorkshire Area Point to Point Club got under way on Sunday with the Point to Point Club meeting at Sheriff Hutton which surpassed last seasons records with racecards been sold out, car parks full to capacity and Point to Point racing seen at its best.

The opening Novice Riders race had 17 runners, many riders having their first ever ride and aquited themselves very well. Sonevafushi who won 5 Mens Open races last year started a hot 4-7 Fav ridden by 16yo Jake Greenall, the pair were always at the head of affairs and after taking up the running at the 3rd last the pair readily drew clear to win by 15 lengths and give his the winning jockey his first winner from only his second ride in Point to Points and carry on the great record of the Greenal family, all 4 brothers have now been victorious in Point to Points.

The Restricted had the smallest amount of entries, however 12 of them ran. Phillipa Shirley Bevans Quotica De Poyans had looked a horse with a future when winning a Cottenham maiden with ease. Ridden by stable jockey Kelly Bryson, the pair dictated the pace and were always in command and despite Elizadoalott under Guy Brewer trying their hardest the pair were never able tto mount a challenge with the Scottish raider winning by 8 lengths despite the winner been heaily eased on the run in.

The Mens Open was full of class, run at a strong pace with Karatchi leading to the 14th, the favourite Always Right who won his maiden at last seasons corresponding meeting took it up approaching the next and despite Ile De Paris Chris Dawson pushed his mount out on the flat to win by 10 lengths.

The Club Members Condition Race was won by Pristine Condition who under Tom Greenall timed his run to perfection to collar long time leader Buy Onling in the shadows of the post and win by length. The winning jockey was riding his first point to point winner on only his second ride back Point to Pointing after a successful amatueur career under rules.

Reflected Glory won the Ladies Open race for owner and trainer Caroline Robinson ridden by her 17 yo daughter Immy. The pair qquickened away after the 3rd last and despite been challenged at the 2nd last by the fav Narciso the 6-1 winner readily drew clear on the flat to win by 6 lengths and make the eams 6-30am start worth while.

The maiden race was split on the day, with a sponser been sought for the 2nd division, after several appeals over the loudspeaker the prize money was soon found from a generous crowd who gave generously to a worth while cause, with all proceeds going to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The 1st Division went to the well bred Areyou coddinme owned by Bishop Auckland based owner and rainer Elaine Smith and under her son Richard, the pair made all the running and stayed on resolutley to beat Nectar De Guye. The Division 2 went to My Old Piano who gave jockey Tom Greenall and owner Lord Daresbury there 2nd winner of the day along with trainer David Easterby who trained both of Greenalls winners. Greenall timed his mount to perfection challenging approaching the last and drawing clear on the flat to win by 3 lengths.
