Melton Hunt Club
Garthorpe
Saturday 12th May 2007
by Graham Taylor

Quality racing and a fine treble for jockey, Stuart Morris were the order of the day, when the Melton Hunt Club held their annual Point to Point meeting at Garthorpe today. With heavy showers forecast during the day attendance figures may have been affected but good ground conditions ensured some excellent racing.

The opening race on the card was The Melton Hunt Club Members Conditions Race and thirteen went to post. This race produced a surprise win for outsider, Just Jove. Young rider, Andrew Corbett, had the nine year old gelding out in front on the first circuit and held off the late challenges of Noel’s Pride and Were In Touch to win by half a length. This win was a real family affair as the winning riders Grandmother owns and bred the horse and her son raced the dam of the winner. Richard Turner and David Brooks were sponsors here.

Mr and Mrs Tim Wood kindly sponsored the second race, The Intermediate and ten went to post. The winner here was Tender Tangle and this gave Stuart Morris his first leg of a treble. The Tim Tarratt trained Hi Up Brenkley and Suffolk based Rocja took the minor placings.

Only four horses were declared for the TBA/MFHA MARES & FILLIES CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL. The two market leaders, Fusion of Tunes and the Sally Alner trained Mrs O’Connell fought for the lead for most of the journey but neither could hold off eventual winner Flax Hill who, cleverly ridden by Peter Mann, raced clear to win comfortably.

Wheat Displays & Exhibitions sponsored Ladies Open Race and although only a field of six went to post, four of these had already won this season. Form horse and favourite, Danaeve, ridden by Sarah Phizacklea, set a fast pace but eventually gave way to lightly raced, Beet De Bob and rider, Hannah Watson who won the race by a margin of ten lengths. Lile Na Casa, with former champion rider Polly Gundry on board took third place.

Seven horses accepted for another championship race, The Marie Curie M.H.C. Members Novices Championship. This was won by 20/1 outsider Sovereign Quest, ridden by Ashby-de-la-Zouch jockey, Richard Armson. He held off a strong late challenge from the hot favourite, Teeton Bollinger, the mount of Dickie Barrett, who didn’t jump as well as expected. Mister Bertolli finished a neck away third.

Sixth race on the card was The Mens Open, sponsored by TTS (Shipping) Ltd. Three horses went to post but this still produced a fascinating contest between the Stuart Morris ridden Coolefind and the five times this season winner, Ballylusky, the mount of leading rider, Richard Burton. The pair finished in this order with the Morris horse winning by six lengths. Outsider, Petrouge, refused to race.

The final race on the card was The Open Maiden, run over 2 ½ miles. This was easily won by the Bill Warner trained six year old, Rathmoley, the Pytchley horse always had plenty in hand on the pacemaker, Jubilee George, winning by a comfortable 15 lengths. This horse gave Stuart Morris his third win of the afternoon and puts the rider in a clear lead for the Leading Rider Award, based on points awarded during the five Garthorpe meetings taking place in 2007.

Two pony races took place prior to the first Point to Point race of the afternoon. The winning riders here were 11 year old Daisy Taylor and 13 year old George Saunders.

The final two local Midlands meetings to take place are the Blankney (Garthorpe) on Saturday 26 th May and the Harborough Race Club at Dingley on Saturday 2 nd June.
