Dulverton West
Bratton Down

Saturday 17th May 2008

RICHARD Woollacott took his unbeaten run of riding winners to seven at Bratton Down on Saturday where close finishes were the order of the day.

The magic number came on a spare ride for Alice Fox-Pitt who sent Lord Code to the Exmoor track. Alice Vantuyll, head girl to Alice’s event rider husband William, said: “Rilly (Goschen) normally rides for us but she has a broken collar bone so Richard rode and it’s his first ride for us.” Bought initially to go eventing, Lord Code found the confines of a dressage arena not to his liking so he was sent eventing. Woollacott said: “It’s easy to win on a nice horse. He jumped fantastic.”

Camden Carrig provided a 33-1 shock in the mixed open which he won by three quarters of a length after staying on well on the run to get the better of the favourite, Rimpton Boy, by half a length. Winning jockey Nock Phillips, who rides the horse for his father John, said staying was the horse’s forte.

The front running Novikova Rose scored in the faster of the two maidens under Rachael Green, putting in a foot perfect round of jumping to win by a head from Dylans Pride with Darren Edwards on board. Her owner breeder Jilly Kelly, who gave trainers Peter and Fiona Shaw a half share, said: “I’m never very confident but I’m thrilled she has won. Catherine Atkinson, who broke her in and has done all the work, would normally ride her but she’s studying for her exams at university.”

Darren Edwards, who had earlier won the members’ race on Master Kevin, went one better in the second division on Marion and Dennis Turner’s Global Party who was sent off the 5-4 favourite and stayed on strongly. The six-year-old is ridden out by 75-year-old Dennis most days, and was bought last summer at Ascot sales. “He’s a genuine horse, but he is still very green,” he said.

Hold On Harry had been off the track for two and half years, but he won the confined in good style for Suzy Berry who has had him for just seven weeks. Nursing a broken collar bone, she was unable to ride the 12-year-old but Ian Popham proved an able substitute.

River Heights was in the last chance saloon after suffering from a series of health problems and his trainers Colin and Karyn Heard had decided to given him a chance in another sphere. But with the addition of first time blinkers and a tongue tie, the seven-year-old won like a good horse, showing no ill effects from a lung infection. “I’m so pleased for him as he has had such a bad year,” said Karyn.
