Stevenstone at Vauterhill
Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May 2016
by Donna Harris

The Kayley Woollacott team were on top form at Bank Holiday Monday's Point-to-Point Stevenestone meeting at Vauterhill, saddling a double with odds on Steeltown taking the mixed open, followed up by Devon General scoring in the Kivells-sponsored confined race.

Steeltown, ridden by regular jockey Jamie Thomas had made most of the running in the feature Mixed Open race, and came home 25 lengths ahead of his nearest rival Lucy's Girl. "We bought him from Ascot sales in 2014 and is an ex Tom Taaffe, he is happier Pointing rather than Hunter Chasing, we my go Cothelstone next but it is ground dependent." stated Kayley Woollacott. The teams second winner was in the form of Devon General in the Confined race, when jockey Matt Hampton took up the lead on Devon General two fences out over Comanche Conflict and won by three lengths. "It was a decent pace and ideally he would like quicker ground, we have worked on him alot since Cothelstone as he is not the most natural of jumpers." stated the trainer with Matt Hampton adding " He never really travelled on the ground, but jumped alot better, class got him through in the end."

The local crowd who braved the early damp conditions which soon turned into glorious sunshine, were treated to a spectacular performance in the opening Members race when odds-on Cinevator stormed home under trainer/jockey Ella Pickard 25 lengths ahead of the field. "I thought the going would be too soft, but he just took off with me." exclaimed the jubilant jockey who added "I intend to enter him for Cothelstone Ladies race next."

Back In June was sent off 11/10 favourite for the Restricted race, and duly obliged by sustaining a challenge over the last fence from Mongress Boy, with Back In June under jockey Jake Bament winning by two lengths. Trainer Karyn Heard quoted " He turned out to be what we wanted, Tyler rides him at home and does much of thee work. We hope to aim Back In June at an intermediate at Bratton Down if ground not too firm."

The Intermediate race went the way of Upto Ollie for the Sarah Pidsley team, having made most of the running under jockey Lee Drowne. "He jumped really well, we had bought him from Doncaster sales as an unbroken four-year old. He says all day, we will possibly go to Upcott next." stated the trainer

The Grey Celt under jockey Darrren Edwards battled on to win the Open Maiden race for the Reuben Chapman team, taking the race by four lengths ahead of Kisha Lad who had put up a bold attempt. With the final race of the day the Jockey Club-sponsored Mares and Fillies race going the way of Fishy Story. Owned by the Gale Force Partnership made up of brothers Richard ad Martin Tucker, Fishy Story was bought out of David Pipe's yard. "Her saddle had slipped on two of her previous starts so she was pulled up." stated Martin Tucker. Jockey Matt Hampton had ridden his double for the day and added "She is an extremely tough mare and a nice restricted prospect."
